Original Kono Bairei (1844 - 1895) Japanese Woodblock
Original 1880's Woodblock Print Flower Series; One Hundred Flowers

A lovely, original 1880s flower print from Kono's "One Hundred Flowers" series.  A beautiful wood block with stunning colors and fine detail.  These excellent Kono prints are terrific examples of floral woodblock prints from the late 19th century tradition.  Originally released in a single album, Kono's flowers were illustrations of some of the favorite native species and exotic flora that were the rage in Japan in the late 19th century.

Original Meiji era woodblocks of these lovely, tranquil flowers are a wonderful area of collecting.  They are a very affordable opportunity to add an original antique woodblock to any interior.  The classic flowers make an excellent design element in a room and add a distinctly Japanese feeling.

Artist- Kono Bairei (1844 - 1895)
Image size- 13" x 8 3/4"
Condition- Color and detail excellent. This print is not backed. Was folded vertically by publisher for storage, now flattened and not noticeable. A tear to lower right repaired from reverse, blends well. Some slight offsetting in subject as shown. Some slight toning. Printed on fine old paper.

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock
From his series; Seichu gishi den (The Tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin)
Original 1917 print from the Yoshikawa Kobukan release

The Tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin- The fantastic tale and adventure of the Forty-Seven Ronin immediately captured the imagination of the Japanese public. Not two weeks after the culmination of the event, stories and plays were already being written about the bravery and loyalty of the Forty-Seven Ronin. Almost a hundred years later, prints artists of the 19th century seized on the enduring fascination with the Tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin and produced lavish print sets of the story and the forty-seven brave men from the tale. Much like many of the artists of the 19th century, Kuniyoshi’s series depicted various important events that represented the important markers of the tale. Check out the amazing set we’re offering in our auctions tonight.

NAMIKI HAJIME was born in Tokyo in 1947. Under the guidance of Shigeru Ogura he began designing sculpture around 1965, and beginning in 1974 through 1978 he exhibited many of his sculpture pieces. By 1978 Namiki also began designing and printing woodblock prints. Mr. Namiki carves his own blocks and self prints each work using sosaku hanga methods. Most Namiki works are printed on gold or silver leaf, which enhances the impact of the image when it is viewed from different angles and in different lights. Namiki's earliest prints featured flowers, but as his oeuvre grew his primary subjects became trees, forests, Mt. Fuji and dragons. Mr. Namiki's work is highly informed by the work of Joichi Hoshi. Mr. Namiki's woodblock prints are found in the collection of the White House in Washington DC; and in numerous private collections.
